An exceptional, unique copy, comprising two additional states of the etchings and enriched with 27 original drawings enhanced with watercolours by Maurice Leloir, most of them signed or monogrammed, in a striking binding by Georges Mercier.

Quarto (210x295 mm), green morocco, geometric border decoration on the covers comprising interlacing thin and thick gold fillets at the corners, spine with raised bands highlighted by a gold fillet, with the same decoration repeated between the bands; double gold fillet on the edges; interior frieze; light brown morocco linings decorated witha frame of gilded palmettes and flowers inlaid with multicoloured morocco and edged with three bands, two of which are narrow in yellow ochre morocco and one wider in burgundy morocco set with a gilded meander, signature "G. Mercier, Sc de son père, 1913’ in the leather, wine-coloured silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on endpapers, covers and spine preserved, half-maroquin slipcase, box edged and signed in full (Georges Mercier, 1913)
XLVIII and 264 pages, 29 illustrations by Maurice Leloir, etched and engraved by Léon Boisson, including 7 plates, 2 title vignettes, 1 frontispiece, 9 chapter heads, 9 end-piece illustrations and 1 table vignette.
Spine of the cover very slightly faded, minimal wear to the edges of the slipcase.
First posthumous edition of this collection of short stories recounting episodes from the Restoration, written shortly before his death by the French diplomat, historian and Academician Albert Sorel (1842–1906). It is illustrated with 29 compositions etched and engraved by Léon Boisson after Maurice Leloir (1853–1940), a watercolourist, draughtsman, engraver, writer and collector specialising in costume, famous for having founded the Société de l'histoire du costume in 1907. A preface by René Vallery-Radot introduces the collection.

Limited edition of 300 copies; this is a unique copy on Vélin du Marais paper, printed for the purchaser of the original drawings, with two additional states of the etchings (pure etching and avant la lettre) and enriched with 27 superb original drawings by Maurice Leloir, all enhanced with watercolours, the vast majority of which are signed or monogrammed.
