Description
[BEEKEEPING]. FORMANOIR DE PALTEAU (Guillaume Louis). A new design for wooden beehives, together with instructions on how to manage the bees, invented by Mr Palteau; and a natural history of these insects. All arranged and edited by Mr ***. An important 18th-century beekeeping manual by the agronomist and beekeeper Formanoir de Palteau, regarded as a pioneer of enlightened beekeeping during the Enlightenment. Metz, published by Joseph Collignon, the King’s Printer, at the Bible d’Or, 1756. Volume in-12 (162 x 103 mm), full marbled and glazed fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with a red morocco patch and cloisonné decoration with raised gold fleurons. The letter "P" appears at the bottom of the spine. Title-frontispiece, xxviij pp., (1 f.), 422 pp., (1 f.), 5 plates. Minor restoration to the top cap. First edition of this technical treatise on beekeeping and the construction of wooden hives, written by the agronomist and beekeeper Guillaume Louis Formanoir de Palteau (1712–1785). This manual is his best-known work, reprinted in 1777 and translated into German in 1766. In it, Formanoir de Palteau proposes a modular hive that now bears his name and a rational method of bee-keeping, inspired by Réaumur’s discoveries. The work is divided into 14 dialogues between Ariste and Eudoxe, covering in particular the construction of hives, the selection of bees, the construction of honeycomb cells, how to collect swarms, the harvesting of honey, etc. Our copy is illustrated with a frontispiece signed ‘les F. Pantaleon’ and five fold-out plates. Some copies contain an additional unnumbered plate, which is missing from this copy. Provenance: handwritten bookplate in black ink on the title page, unidentified. A fine, fresh and clean copy.
