CAMUS (Albert). The Stranger. Novel. A rare press copy of the first edition of Camus’s cult classic *The Stranger*. Paris, Gallimard, undated (Printed on 21 April 1942). In-12 format. (190 x 120 mm). Paperback, cream cover printed in red and black. 159 pages. Spine and edges of the covers slightly yellowed, spine slightly warped, small tear at the top of the back cover (approx. 1.5 cm). First edition for which no large-format paper was printed; one of the rare press copies. This first edition of The Stranger was printed on 21 April 1942 in a print run of 4,400 copies: 400 press copies, 500 copies without any indication, and 3,500 copies with fictitious indications of the second to eighth ‘editions’.
The press copies, not intended for sale, do not bear the price [25 francs] on the spine of the cover. In 1942, with paper in short supply and Albert Camus still an unknown author, Gallimard did not print copies on high-quality paper, as was customary at the time. A fine copy.
