Description
LEBEL (Edmond). PICHON (Baron Jérôme). [ RIFFAUT Adolphe Pierre ]. Tourelles de Paris.
A bibliophile’s rarity: one of only three or four copies of a special edition, from Baron Pichon’s library and enriched with his handwritten notes.
No place, no date (Paris, circa 1858).
Volume in-8 (220 x 152 mm). Half-glazed calf, spine with raised bands highlighted by blind-stamped fillets, title label in mosaic morocco. Contemporary binding.
2 handwritten pages, 9 plates. Spine worn, top cap worn away. A few scattered foxing spots.
First edition and first printing of a remarkable rarity. This collection comprises 9 etchings by Edmond Lebel (1834–1908), 8 of which are based on drawings by Adolphe Pierre Riffaut. These plates are distinguished by intaglio engravings adorning their margins.
The volume opens with a two-page handwritten note signed by Baron Jérôme Pichon (1812–1896), president of the Société des bibliophiles français and one of the most important French collectors of the 19th century. In it, he explains the origin of these ‘vignettes’: they were originally engraved to mark the copies of Gomboust’s map of Paris intended for members of the Society. Once the 30 required copies had been printed, the turrets were erased from the copper plate.
This volume is a separate print presented by Lebel to Baron Pichon; the latter notes: “I do not know whether there are 3 or 4 copies”. To the eight original views drawn by Riffaut (Rue de la Vieille-Lanterne, Rue des Prêtres-Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois, Cul-de-sac du Bœuf, rue Vieille-du-Temple, rue de la Tisseranderie, rue de Bailleul, rue Hautefeuille and rue de Jérusalem), Lebel added a ninth plate especially for his patron: a view of the Hôtel de Lauzun, the Baron’s historic residence on the Île Saint-Louis.
Provenance: from the libraries of Baron Jérôme Pichon and Edmond Mareuse (1848–1932), historian of Paris, with his bookplate engraved by Lalauze.
A first-rate document for the history of lost Paris and French bibliophilia.
