A fine copy on large-format paper, in a beautiful contemporary binding featuring the coat of arms of the city of Bordeaux.

In-8 (120x200 mm), full red morocco, smooth spine decorated with compartmentalised fleurons and the title gilded lengthwise on a piece of green leather, covers stamped with the coat of arms of Bordeaux within a triple Duseuil-style frame, gold fillet with cut-outs, gilt roulette on the chases, pale blue half-leather endpapers, all edges gilt (contemporary binding).
XVI and 79 pages, title medallion, a few headpieces and tailpieces.
Scuffing, slight leather loss on the front cover, tiny hole on a joint, one corner slightly folded, tiny hole on a white endpaper.
Second edition, published a year after the original of 1784, on large-format paper, of this three-act comedy in prose, dedicated to the city of Bordeaux, by M. Joseph Pilhes (1740–1832), known as La Beaumelle, a French writer and politician born and died in Tarascon-sur-Ariège. The play was performed in Paris by the Comédiens Français ordinaires du Roi on 21 August 1784, and in Versailles on the following 23 November. It is preceded by a dedication from the author: ‘To the Masters, Lieutenants of the Mayor and Jurats of the city of Bordeaux.’
