Second edition of the complete works of Sidoine Apollinaire (430–489), Bishop of Clermont, edited by Jean Savaron (1556/1557–1622). This edition, published a year after the original, is supplemented by a commentary on the works of Sidoine Apollinaire.
Deeply attached to the city where he was born and died, it is therefore no surprise that Savaron, a recognised member of the Republic of Letters, chose the Bishop of Clermont as his subject of study. For Sidoine Apollinaire, despite a relatively late entry into the episcopate, was one of the great poets and men of letters of the Late Roman Empire. It was most likely thanks to his skills as a versifier that he survived the successive seizures of power by Emperor Majorian and Euric, King of the Visigoths, even though he had supported the former’s predecessor and organised his city’s defence against the latter.
Handwritten ex-libris ‘C. de Raymond’ with library number (no. 1854) on the flyleaf.
[Brunet V, 374.]
A fine, fairly fresh copy in a good contemporary binding.
