Description
SALVINI (Salvino). Fasti consolari dell'Accademia Fiorentina. An important collection of biographies of members of the Florentine Academy, including the first and most influential biography of Galileo, written by his last pupil. Florence, Gaetano Tartini and Santi Franchi, 1717. 1 vol. In-4 (254 x 193 mm). Later full ivory vellum, spine with four raised bands, red morocco patch, gilt lettering, red speckled edges. Early 19th-century binding. XXXI-676 pp., [1] f. Approval. Spine slightly faded, a few pinholes on the vellum. First edition, very well printed, with a copper-engraved vignette of the Florentine Academy on the title page, text embellished with wood-engraved headpieces, footpieces and initials. This volume brings together several biographical entries on eminent members of the Florentine Academy, but it owes its fame to the inclusion of the biography of Galileo Galilei (pp. 393–446) written by his last pupil, Vincenzo Viviani (1622–1703). Written in the form of a letter to Prince Leopold de’ Medici, this biography of Galileo is the first ever to be composed, and remains today a major source for the historiography of the astronomer. It compiles facts, significant episodes, accounts of discoveries and anecdotes that are constantly repeated and cited – for example, the legend of Galilei demonstrating to his students that Aristotle was wrong to believe that the speed of a falling object is related to its weight by dropping balls of different masses from the Leaning Tower of Pisa; stories about how he came up with the idea for the pendulum after seeing a suspended lamp swinging back and forth in Pisa Cathedral, etc. Provenance: an old handwritten bookplate by Petro Gasperi (?) on the half-title page and repeated on the flyleaf; a second handwritten bookplate dated 1833. A very fine copy, in excellent condition.
