Description
GERNING (Johann Isaac von). A Picturesque Tour along the Rhine from Mainz to Cologne. A superb illustrated English book, translated from the German by John Black, comprising 24 large, finely hand-coloured views based on the compositions of the landscape painter Christian Georg Schütz the Younger (1758–1823). London, R. Ackermann, 1820. Quarto (340 x 280 mm), contemporary binding in full aubergine morocco, spine with broad false ribs richly decorated with small ironwork and perforated fleurons, gilt fillet and lace borders on the covers, title in the centre of the front cover, gilt edges. In English, xiv, [ii], 178 pages, 1 folding map and 24 plates. Spines and corners slightly rubbed, front spine split over approximately 15 cm. Slight staining opposite the plates. First edition of this exceptional publication, dedicated to His Majesty George IV, produced by subscription (list of subscribers at the beginning of the volume). Printed on fine cream vellum paper. The original German edition appeared without illustrations in 1819. The work describes a picturesque journey along the Rhine, from Mainz to Cologne, a region then considered the most charming in Germany. The text, which is at once topographical, historical and cultural, is aimed at ‘travellers of cultivated mind’. The 24 colour plates, of great visual richness, are now its main attraction, illustrating iconic sites such as Mainz, Fürstenberg Castle, St John’s Church, Pfalz Castle, Kaub, salmon fishing at Lurley, Koblenz, Bornhofen and Cologne. Complete with the engraved map on a double sheet. A copy free from foxing.
