Description
[MARILLAC (Charles, de)]. Discovrs svr la rovptvre de la trefve.
An important work, the only one entirely devoted to the Truce of Vaucelles (1556) between Henry II and Charles V, written by a diplomat and published in the same year.
Paris, Michel de Vascosan, Rue S. Iaques, at the sign of La Fontaine, 1556.
In-12 (168 x 106 mm), marbled tan sheepskin, blind-stamped border on the covers, ribbed spine decorated with a red morocco patch and a rich design of small gilt ironwork. 18th-century binding.
First edition of this very rare work devoted to the diplomatic and military tensions in the mid-16th century between France and the Habsburgs.
The author, Charles de Marillac, was a French politician and diplomat in the service of Kings Francis I, Henry II and Francis II; he served notably as ambassador to England, Switzerland, Germany, the Imperial Court at Augsburg, Rome and Constantinople.
His account, written from the perspective of a diplomat and direct observer, provides a valuable insight into the political debates and the justifications put forward by the key figures of the time.
From the libraries of Picard (handwritten bookplate on the title page) and André Ruel (printed bookplate pasted on the inside front cover).
Copy in excellent condition.
