Description
DU FAUR DE SAINT-JORRY (Pierre). *Agonisticon sive de re athletica ludisque veterum gymnicis, musicis, atque. Circensibus spicilegiriorum tractatus, tribus libris comprehensi*. A unique copy, a gift from the author and annotated by the recipient, who attests to its Catholic nature in the face of an overly ecumenical proofreader. Lyon, François Fabre, 1592. In-4 (246 x 160 mm), full vellum, smooth spine with handwritten title and author’s name. 12 unnumbered folios, 363 pages, 8 unnumbered folios (index). Binding generally rubbed, caps damaged, leather missing at the foot of the covers, water stains on the margins, foxing, paper missing from the upper corners of pages 335–340. In Latin and Greek. First edition. A treatise on sport and ancient competitions, one of the first of its kind. The author, First President of the Parliament of Toulouse and Chancellor to the Infanta of Portugal, displays his full erudition here: Homer appears alongside Plato, Aristotle and the Church Fathers. Handwritten bookplate on the flyleaf: "Hunc ab ipso authore dons accepi" (I received this book as a gift from the author himself), signed Solargues and dated 18 August 1592. This may be Michel de Solargues, a Catholic pamphleteer from Toulouse, author notably of the "Bustum Ruppelæ" (The Bonfire of La Rochelle), a Latin account celebrating the capture of the city by royal troops in 1628. Contemporary handwritten annotations in the margins, notably on pages 177 and 283, where the scribe (probably Solargues himself) criticises a proofreader who, presumably unconcerned with religious unity even as Catholics and Protestants were still fighting across the country, had softened certain remarks by du Faur de Saint-Jorry (1532–1600). The notes of an indignant Solargues thus attest to the author’s Catholicism and even propose to correct the corrections (page 177 is consequently heavily crossed out). A fine, unique copy, as it bears corrections made by someone close to the author.
