The remarkable illustrations comprise 49 folding plates engraved in intaglio by P.-J. Mariette after drawings by the architect Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond. Figures in the text, headpieces, initials and tailpieces.
The work comprises four parts: the first covers the theory of beautiful gardens; the second deals with the construction of flowerbeds, paths, groves, boulingrins, etc.; the third, with the cultivation of plants, flowers and shrubs for gardens and orangeries; the last on hydraulics applied to gardens: water management, fountains, reservoirs, ponds, etc.
Antoine Joseph Dezallier d’Argenville (1680–1765) was a French naturalist, collector and art historian. He became a Master of Accounts in 1733 and an advisor to the king in 1743.
His *Theory and Practice of Gardening* enjoyed great popularity in France; the work was translated into English in 1712 and into German in 1731. The work he undertook to produce this book enabled him, from 1751 onwards, to become one of the major contributors to the Encyclopédie, or Dictionnaire raisonné des Sciences, Arts and Crafts, for which he wrote over 540 articles on gardening and hydraulics.
A very fine copy.
