Description
LOPEZ (Thomas). Map of the Kingdoms of Spain and Portugal, showing the postal routes and the boundaries of the various provinces and governments. Rare coloured map of Spain and Portugal published during the Peninsular War, 1807–1814. Paris, Chez Collins, 1808. In-8 (282 x 185 mm). Fold-out map mounted on canvas, in the publisher’s green morocco-style long-grain paper binding, with gilt title on the front cover. Dimensions of the unfolded map (82 x 1104 cm). Binding rubbed, a few faint foxing spots, otherwise in very good condition. A fine map of the Iberian Peninsula drawn up by Thomas López de Vargas Machuca (1730–1802), geographer to the King of Spain. Engraved in intaglio and hand-coloured. This French edition of 1808 was published in the very year the conflict flared up: whilst Joseph Bonaparte was proclaimed King of Spain, Wellington’s British troops landed to support the Portuguese and Spanish resistance. A fine, fresh and clean copy.
