Description
DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU (Henri-Louis). Treatise on the Preservation of Grains, and in Particular of Wheat.  An important treatise on the preservation of agricultural produce by the botanist Duhamel du Monceau (1700–1782), one of the founders of modern agronomy and forestry. Paris, Guerin & Delatour, 1754. One volume in-12 (169x104 mm). Marbled and glazed tan calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with a mosaic panel and panels adorned with fleurons featuring small gilt ironwork. xlii-311pp and 13 folding plates. One corner slightly damaged; corners of 7 leaves at the beginning slightly dog-eared. Second edition, corrected and expanded with several additions and an extra plate compared to the original of 1753, which was paginated xxviii-294pp + 12pl. A work following the famine of 1752 in which Du Monceau attempts to propose solutions for better preservation of wheat reserves during years of bountiful harvests. These include, in particular, better drying and cleaning of the grain, and the ventilation of large granaries using bellows. A true encyclopaedic scholar, Duhamel joined the Royal Academy of Sciences in 1738 and from that date onwards specialised in forestry production techniques. He had turned his estate at Denainvilliers in the Gâtinais into a veritable experimental agricultural station. In 1755, he authored a *Treatise on Trees and Shrubs Cultivated in France* and, above all, his famous *Treatise on Fruit Trees* (1768), written in collaboration with the agronomist René le Berryais. A fine copy, complete with all 13 folding plates drawn and engraved by Guillaume Dheulland (17..?-177…).
