Description
[18TH-CENTURY CARVED WOODEN PANEL]. ‘St John the Baptist’. A very fine carved wooden panel executed on vellum around 1700, depicting St John the Baptist. Circa 1700. 123 x 90 mm; frame: 280 x 250 mm. Superb cut-work, delicately imitating lace partially highlighted in red and green, composed of flowers, foliage, baskets and two angels visible in the lower section. The whole forms a central medallion in which Saint John the Baptist is finely painted in watercolour and gouache. Canivet mounted on black paper and presented under a mat and a modern gilded frame.
