Description
DIDEROT (Denis). Works, published from the author’s manuscripts by Jacques-André Naigeon. The definitive edition. Paris, Desray and Deterville, Year VI – 1798. 15 volumes, in-8 (200 x 131 mm). Contemporary bindings in full brown shagreen, fine gilt lace framing on the covers, plain spines adorned with two title labels and volume numbers in red morocco, elegant gilt-tooled decoration. Approximately 450–500 pages per volume. Leather on spines slightly faded, scuffed; cap bands worn or worn down. A few foxing spots and several passages marked in pencil in the margins. This edition is considered the first, the finest and the most complete published in the 18th century. Illustrated with a portrait of Diderot engraved by Gaucher after Jean-Baptiste Greuze, 15 engraved plates and a folding table. In 1773, before leaving for Russia, Denis Diderot (1713–1784) had entrusted Jacques-André Naigeon (1738–1810), with whom he was very close and who was, in a sense, his disciple, the task of arranging and revising his manuscripts with a view to producing an edition of his works. On his return, Diderot made no changes to these arrangements, and Naigeon, following the author’s death, was able to publish this edition of the OEuvres. If texts such as the “Paradoxe sur le comédien” or “Le Neveu de Rameau” do not appear in this edition, the reason is probably that Naigeon complied with the author’s own wishes. Tchémerzine, II, p. 972; Adams, (D.), Bibliography of the Works of Denis Diderot, 1739–1900, I, Ferney-Voltaire, 2000, pp. 98–109. A fine set in uniform period bindings.
