Description
[18TH-CENTURY CANIVET]. ‘Sub umbra alarum tuarum protege nos’. Large rectangular canivet on vellum, finely cut and enhanced with gold and colour in the 18th century. It bears the verse from Psalm 16, taken from the ‘Prayer of David’: “Sub umbra alarum tuarum protege nos” (“Protect us in the shadow of your wings”). 18th century. 170 x 130 mm; frame: 242 x 182 mm. The cut-work is very finely executed. Against a background of roses and carnations, a large medallion of gilded foliage depicts, against a landscape backdrop, a dove perched on a tree. Below, within the frame, David’s prayer is inscribed in Latin. Canivet mounted on blue paper and presented in a modern glass frame.
