Description
DUMAS (Alexandre). Bouts-rimés. Paris, Librairie du Petit Journal, 1865. In-12 (120x180 mm), navy blue half-shagreen, spine with faux raised bands decorated with the title and the author’s name in gilt lettering, covers and spine preserved (Later binding). X and 378 pages. Minor scuffing to the edge of the front cover and the corners; original covers have darkened, with some faint foxing, more noticeable on the first few pages. First and only edition of this amusing collection of verses, for which Alexandre Dumas was the initiator, preface writer and publisher. Following a literary game with his friend Méry, Dumas launched a ‘Bouts rimés’ competition for readers of the ‘Petit Journal’, involving the composition of a 24-line poem with a specified end rhyme. This resulted in 220 poems, which Dumas decided to bring together in this volume, with an estimated print run of 500 copies and a preface containing the poem written jointly by Dumas and Méry. Our copy bears the autograph dedication signed by Dumas, “Avec mille compliments”, mentioned by Vicaire. [Vicaire III, 428]. A fine copy, attractively bound.
