A rare colour copy of J.-J. Rousseau’s botanical atlas.
Paris, published by Poinçot, 1789.
In-8 (398 x 125 mm). Half tan sheepskin, smooth spine, attached label and decoration of fillets and fleurons in cold-stamped and gilt metal (Modern binding).
Title page, 44 unnumbered folios, 44 plates.
Margins trimmed short at the binding, of which 14 plates have small fragments of the image missing.
Famous botanical collection by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, sought after for its 44 magnificent botanical plates engraved by J. Aubry and hand-coloured in watercolour, each accompanied by an explanatory leaflet.
This volume is intended to accompany the Letters on Botany, to which 38 plates are dedicated, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Dictionary of Botanical Terms in the edition of his Works by Louis-Sébastien Mercier for the remaining 6.
