A luxurious edition of Jules Renard’s famous autobiographical novel, illustrated in the first print run with 52 etchings by Alméry Lobel-Riche (1877–1950), painter, engraver, and one of the greatest illustrators in French bibliophilia.
"A very fine, highly rated publication, which deserves even more attention, as it proves that, even without colour, a highly talented engraver such as Lobel-Riche is capable of producing a work of great satisfaction with original black etchings" [Carteret, Trésor du bibliophile, illustrés modernes 1875-1945, Vol. IV, p. 338.].
Limited edition of 350 numbered copies, this one being one of the first 150 copies on Japanese paper or vellum (No. 52, on Japanese paper), comprising three states of the engravings: the pure etching, the final state with remarks, the final state with the letter for the headings and before the letter for the plates.
Attractive binding, elegantly lined by Léon Gruel (1841–1923).
