LAFAYETTE (Madame de) – VIEILLARD (Roger). The Princess of Clèves. A private, non-commercial copy belonging to Roger Vieillard, enriched with 10 preparatory drawings in his own hand, in ink and graphite. Paris, Imprimerie Nationale, ‘Lettres françaises’ series, 1980. Quarto, publisher’s Bradel binding in full carmine leather, spine with four raised bands, gilt fillets between the bands, gilt head edge. 377 pages; frontispiece, 9 plates, 4 vignettes, 1 intaglio engraving; 1 drawing in black ink, 5 drawings in ochre ink, 4 drawings in graphite. Corners of the back cover slightly rubbed. An illustrated edition featuring 14 original compositions by Roger Vieillard, including 10 full-page illustrations. Our copy also contains 10 preparatory drawings in ink and graphite, some of which are signed by the illustrator. Limited edition of 5,200 copies; this is one of 200 numbered non-commercial copies on pure-fibre Rives paper, accompanied by an original intaglio print by Roger Vieillard (no. 73). The drawings included in our copy correspond to different states of the frontispiece, vignettes (including one in two different states), as well as certain plates. Roger Vieillard’s personal copy, in addition to the 10 original drawings, contains: - a typescript introduction to *La Princesse de Clèves* written by Noémie Hepp (an academic specialising in 17th-century French literature). - a fold-out map of the University of Paris-Sorbonne dated 29 December 1980, written and signed by Pierre-Georges Castex, director of the collection, thanking Roger Vieillard for the illustrations in our edition. Ex-libris of Roger and Anita Vieillard. A very fine copy in excellent condition.
