Description
GAUTIER (Judith). YAMAMOTO (Hōsui). Poems of the Dragonfly. Translated from the Japanese based on the literal version by Mr Saionzi, Councillor of State to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. A rare volume, the result of a collaboration between Judith Gautier, a leading figure in French Symbolism and Orientalism, and the Japanese painter Hōsui Yamamoto. Through this beautiful volume, Europeans discovered Japanese ‘waka’ poetry, a decisive revelation for the Symbolist movement. A copy enhanced by a signed autograph dedication from Judith Gautier. Paris, [L. Frinzine et Cie], Ch. Gillot, [1885]. In-4 volume (313 x 243 mm), paperback, cold-stamped (snakeskin-style) and illustrated cover. (55 ff.), 7 plates. Cover faded, top joint cracked lengthwise, not serious. First edition of this collection of Japanese poems translated into verse by Judith Gautier, with a preface by Tsoura-Youki. Each page is illustrated with a composition by the Japanese painter Hōsui YAMAMOTO (1850–1906), reproduced in chromotype using the Gillot process, each printed in a different colour. In addition, there are 8 colour illustrations by the same artist, including one on the title page and 7 as inserts. A print run of 820 copies on Japanese imperial paper, unbound. Enriched with an autographed dedication signed "To Mr Denizot, a warm tribute, Judith Gautier". A fine copy as published at the time.
