Spine rubbed, small tears to the head and foot of the book, fragile stitching.
A fine edition of this account of Eugène Fromentin’s (1820–1876) journey through southern Algeria and his stay in Laghouat during the summer of 1853, illustrated with 102 delicate black-and-white and colour compositions by the painter and engraver Lucien Mainssieux (1885–1958), including 21 etchings, 31 watercolours and 50 drawings, perfectly capturing “the natural atmosphere and luminous vibrancy of the African skies” (prospectus).
Limited edition of 100 numbered copies on Rives vellum, this being no. 75, enriched with a set of 21 etchings, numbered and signed by the artist, and 4 plates of specimens, brought together in the publisher’s illustrated prospectus (1 double-leaf folio).
A unique copy in which all the black-and-white drawings have been hand-coloured by Lucien Mainssieux for Marcel Monteux, as indicated by the two autograph notes signed by the artist and the publisher on the colophon.
