First published in issues 2 and 3 of *Le Livre d’Art*, Paul Fort’s journal which ran for only three issues, the play premiered at the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre on 10 December 1896, “before a scandalised audience which, without fully understanding it, witnessed a double birth: that of a myth and that of a certain modern theatre” (En français dans le texte, 1990, no. 322).
