Description
[PHILOSOPHICAL MANUSCRIPT 1718]. DAMIENS DEREVILLON DE BETHUNE (Jean Joseph). Logicae Majoris. An interesting philosophical manuscript in Latin, signed at the beginning and end by Jean Joseph Damiens Derevillion de Bethune and dated 1718. No place mentioned, 1718. Small quarto volume (210 x 175 mm), tan sheepskin, ribbed spine decorated with a medallion and panels set with gilt metal. Contemporary binding. 183pp., 243pp. Leather slightly faded and rubbed, marks and stains on the covers, small areas of leather loss at both headbands, two corners pierced. Some signs of handling. Approximately 100 leaves with small holes (worm damage) of no consequence. Scholastic manuscript on philosophy written in Latin in beautiful calligraphic script in black ink. Neatly written with few erasures. Opens with an architectural frontispiece engraved and illustrated with copperplate engravings depicting portraits of famous philosophers (St Thomas Aquinas, Aristotle, Plato, Epicurus, René Descartes, St Catherine). 3 18th-century cut-outs mounted, original gouaches. The work is divided into two parts: The first deals with logic (Logica Majoris), that is to say, the principles of reasoning, whilst the second addresses rhetoric, the art of persuasion and eloquent expression. These two disciplines, stemming from the classical tradition, were frequently taught together in colleges and universities of the 17th and 18th centuries. Following this, we have bound ‘Sodales Mariani, Duaci, 1717. (7pp).’
