A Journey to the Levant in the years 1749, 50, 51 and 52, containing observations on natural history, medicine, agriculture and trade, and particularly on the natural history of the Holy Land. Translated from the German. A highly interesting naturalist’s journey to the Levant by Frédéric Hasselquist (1722–1752), a Swedish physician and naturalist, and a pupil of Linnaeus. Paris, Delalain, 1769. 2 volumes in-12 (170 x 105 mm), marbled tan half-basane, ribbed spine decorated with two joined medallions and panels adorned with fleurons in gilt metal, red edges. 2 uncut leaves, 260 pp., 2 blank leaves, 201 (1) pp., 1 blank leaf. First French translation based on the German version of this reference work, originally published in Swedish in 1757. "the first systematic natural history of the Holy Land" (Blackmer). A pupil of Carl von Linné, Frédéric Hasselquist set out to study the flora and fauna of the Levant and Egypt; he died of illness in Smyrna (in 1752), but not before sending his work to Linné, who had it published a few years later. The work is divided into two parts: the first comprises Hasselquist’s Journal and the letters he wrote from the East to Linnaeus; the second contains observations on the natural history, diseases and medicine of the peoples of the East. Provenance: ‘Sophie Potocka’ with a handwritten bookplate on the title pages. Countess Sophie Potocka (1760–1822) was famous in her day for her beauty and her adventurous life. A fresh and clean copy.
