Description
[MONTPELLIER]. AIGREFEUILLE (Charles d'). History of the City of Montpellier from its Origins to the Present Day. Volumes 1 and 2. First edition of this rare political and religious history of Montpellier, illustrated with three large fold-out maps of the city. Montpellier, Jean Martel, 1737 and 1739. 2 folio volumes (245x365 mm), full brown marbled sheepskin, spine with 6 cold-stamped guilloché raised bands, gilded fleurons and double border between the ribs, title gilded on a piece of fawn leather, red edges (contemporary bindings). XXXIV, 1 f. (chronological list of lords), 707 pp. and 3 ff. of tables; 3 ff. (epistle, preface, approval, errata) and 455 pp., 1 repeated title vignette, 2 header vignettes in vol. 1, 3 large fold-out maps (570x770 mm) in vol. 1, headbands, initials and tailpieces. Titles printed in black and red. The set is rubbed, with the leather bindings showing wear and tear, including losses on the covers, edges and corners; the caps are worn down, there are minor holes, and one joint is split over 6 cm. The interior is slightly discoloured, with some foxing; some pages in volume 2 are slightly creased. First edition of this history of Montpellier from the early Middle Ages to 1729, published by Charles d'Aigrefeuille, canon of the city’s Saint-Pierre Cathedral. The first volume, published in 1737, covers the city’s political history, whilst the second, published in 1739, focuses on its ecclesiastical history. Volume 1 contains three large fold-out maps of the city (a map of the city and citadel of Montpellier and its surroundings, a map of the city before the Wars of Religion, and a map of the siege of Montpellier in 1622 engraved by Villaret). Handwritten bookplate on the flyleaf. A rare work in contemporary bindings, with well-preserved interiors.
