Minor rubbing on the spine, very rare and minimal foxing, slight transfer from the frontispiece onto the title page. First illustrated edition of Eugène Fromentin’s literary masterpiece, a great novel that is as much psychological as it is political, adorned with 40 landscapes drawn and etched by Gustave Leheutre (1861–1932). This is the only book illustrated by the artist. Limited edition of 117 numbered copies; this is no. 8, printed for Pierre Baudin (1863–1917), a French journalist and politician, and member of the Société des Gens de Lettres. A very complete copy, including the table of illustrations featuring two etchings, which are sometimes missing. From the library of Francis Kettaneh, bearing his bookplate; monogram R.L.B. on the flyleaf. A lovely Art Nouveau creation from the very early 20th century, perfectly executed by Petrus Ruban (1851–1929), one of the greatest bookbinders of his time.
