First edition of the definitive catalogue raisonné of the engraved works of Théophile Steinlen (1859–1923), draughtsman, painter, engraver, illustrator, poster artist and sculptor of anarchist sensibility, an emblematic artist of late 19th-century Montmartre.
The catalogue lists 745 of his works – etchings, monotypes, prints, music titles, posters, book covers, newspapers and magazines, invitations and menus, and various illustrations – many of which are reproduced in the text. The volume is introduced by a preface by Roger Marx and followed by a bibliography of studies and articles on Steinlen.
Limited edition of 575 copies, this being one of the first 25 on Shizuoka paper (No. I), with 4 engravings and 3 lithographs in 3 states (including 2 with remarks) and 4 inserts in double states. The first edition contains one additional engraving compared to the standard edition.
The copy is further enhanced by the menu from the dinner held on 10 July 1913 at the Taverne de Paris, specially printed to celebrate the book’s publication (adorned with an original etching) and an original pen-and-ink drawing signed by Steinlen depicting a vagabond in the countryside.
A rare copy, well-prepared by Courty.
