Milet-Mureau, Brigadier General in the Corps of Engineers, Director of Fortifications, and former Member of the Constituent Assembly. A seminal work on the history of the great French maritime expeditions of the 18th century, published at the request of the National Assembly following the tragic disappearance of La Pérouse. Paris, published by Plassan, Year VI [1798]. 4 vols. in-8 (210 × 135 mm). Red glazed half-calf, smooth spine decorated with an elegant romantic design in gilt and blind-stamped metalwork, marbled covers, edges and endpapers. (Binding from the 1820s). In volume 2, a tear on the folio comprising pp. 321–322, with no loss of paper; small marginal stains on the last two folios. Second edition following the first published in 1797. Complete text in four volumes, without the atlas. Contains the Tables of the Compass Route (1785–1788), those of the Astrolabe (1785–1787), as well as a General Table (Volume III). In 1785, Jean-François de Galaup, Count of La Pérouse, began preparations for a vast maritime voyage of a scientific and exploratory nature. The expedition’s objective was to map the regions of the Pacific—North and South America, Asia and Australasia—and to rival the great voyages of Captain James Cook. It was sponsored by King Louis XVI himself, who was keen to demonstrate that France could rival England in the scientific conquest of the seas. Louis-Marie-Antoine de Milet-Mureau (1756–1825), a military engineer and member of the Constituent Assembly, did not take part in La Pérouse’s expedition. He was commissioned by the National Assembly to compile and publish the travel accounts left by La Pérouse, based on the documents the latter had sent before his disappearance. The journals covered the period from 1785 to 1788, up to the last letter received at Botany Bay in February 1788. Milet-Mureau did not alter the substance of La Pérouse’s texts; he organised the material and added explanatory notes.
