A very fine copy preserved in a splendid Art Nouveau binding by Henri Blanchetière, perfectly executed in lined morocco, decorated with mosaicked roses and violets. Paris, Romagnol, 1909. Volume in-4 (305 x 230 mm). Havana morocco, covers framed by a band of mosaic-patterned pink morocco, highlighted with blind-stamped and gilt fillets, in the centre of the covers a red rose on the front and a yellow rose on the back, both in mosaic, with mosaic violets at the corners; inside covers in green morocco decorated with bands of lavallière morocco forming interlacing patterns in the Art Nouveau style. Gilded edges on endpapers. Edged slipcase. 262 pages. Spine slightly sun-faded, minor flaws to the slipcase. Slight foxing on a few leaves. A deluxe edition featuring 39 original etchings in black and red chalk, both in the text and as plates, by Joseph-Marius Avy. A unique edition limited to 300 copies; this is one of 90 copies on Japanese paper (no. 33), containing two versions (final and with a note) of all the plates. This copy is enhanced by a signed drawing by the artist, a signed etching by the artist and the subscription prospectus. Joseph Marius Jean Avy, known as Marius Avy, born on 21 September 1871 in Marseille and died on 29 December 1939 in Paris, was a painter of genre scenes, landscapes and murals, a pastel artist and an illustrator. ‘Les Demi-Vierges’ is a novel first published in 1894. The story is set in bourgeois society in late 19th-century France. Provenance: J. Tessier.
