Description
[NORTH AFRICA]. Original photographs of North Africa and Algeria. 1870. Documentary photo album featuring scenes from North Africa (probably Algeria). No place, undated (circa 1870). Oblong album (150 x 230 mm), photographs (90 x 60 mm). Deluxe album in full Russian morocco, with gilt fillet decoration framing the covers, and an empty escutcheon on the front cover. Brass fittings, clasp intact. 24 cardboard plates, perforated. Original photographic prints. Binding rubbed, significant play in the mitred fastenings of the plates. Signs of handling. Some faded photographs. The 86 photographs depict portraits of women and men, street scenes, architectural views (mosques, fortifications), and urban and rural landscapes. The first 40 photographs show only portraits of women in traditional dress. Provenance: R. Ameil, with heraldic bookplate. A very interesting visual record of North Africa during the French colonial period.
