A splendid edition of this short story, originally published in the magazine Gil Blas in 1882, entirely engraved and illustrated with 13 elegant plates, etched by Eugène-André Champollion after the original paintings by Jules Ferry, with the text inscribed in a small box set aside on each composition. The title, the text and the monogram on the title page were engraved by Stern. A laudatory text by the novelist Henri Lavaudan (1859–1940) introduces the short story.
Limited edition of 76 copies on Marais vellum, this being one of 31 non-commercial copies, including an additional proof of the etchings with notes. A unique copy, enhanced by a proof of the work with the publisher’s annotations and corrections, bound in a separate volume.
Elegant bindings, one of which is richly lined by Mercier.
