Conquet, 1889–1890. 2 volumes in 1 folio volume (268 x 175 mm), full cherry-coloured Jansenist morocco, ribbed spine, blue morocco lining decorated with a gilded border frieze, gilded fleurons with red morocco mosaic at the corners, blue moiré silk endpapers, double combed endpapers, guilloché headbands, double gilded fillets at the edges, gilt edges; slipcase edged in the same material. Binding by Bonleu. 3 blank leaves, VII, 223 pages, 2 blank leaves; 1 blank leaf, XI, 211 pages, 3 blank leaves; 2 portraits of Victor Hugo, 30 black etchings: 10 plates, 10 vignettes and 10 end-piece illustrations. Spine slightly faded, very slight rubbing to the raised bands, slipcase rubbed. Double edition illustrated with thirty-two etchings by Léon Boisson and Eugène-André Champollion after originals by Arturo Michelena and Adrien Moreau, including 2 portraits of Victor Hugo and 10 plates. Limited edition of 500 copies; this is one of the 150 numbered copies on Japanese paper or Marais vellum (no. 136 on Japanese paper, with the publisher’s initials). A very fine copy in excellent condition.
