Description
GOULD (John). The Mammals of Australia. Part IV. The fourth part, in its first edition, of this important atlas of Australian mammals, featuring 14 splendid lithographs, finely hand-coloured by Richter after drawings by John Gould and his wife. London, published by the Author, 1852. In-plano (390x570 mm), half-brown cloth, cardboard covers, the front cover titled and illustrated in black (contemporary binding). 1 blank folio, 28 folios including 14 lithographic plates by Richter after Gould, hand-coloured, and 14 pages of description, 1 blank folio. Text in English. Spine worn, losses to spine, edges and corners, covers slightly soiled, pages largely detached from the spine, some foxing, more pronounced on the text pages. First edition of the fourth part of one of the major works by the British ornithologist and naturalist John Gould (1804–1881). It contains 14 lithographs of exceptional finesse, hand-coloured, depicting various Australian marsupials from life (kangaroos, rats, bats), each accompanied by a description of the species. It was during a journey undertaken in 1838 with his wife Elizabeth to observe the birds of Australia that John Gould, fascinated by the strange mammals he discovered in the region, decided to dedicate this exceptional collection to them; the lithographs, produced by H. C. Richter based on drawings made by Elizabeth and John during their stay, introduced these extraordinary creatures to countless readers in the 19th century. A fragile copy in the publisher’s binding, though the plates have nevertheless retained all their brilliance.
