Description
[Manuscript]. ANONYMOUS. Egmont: A Historical Overview. A very fine original manuscript, never published, devoted to the history of the Counts of Egmond in the 16th and 17th centuries, an important noble house in the Netherlands, originally from the Duchy of Gelderland, which played a central role in the Wars of Religion, the Dutch Revolt and the birth of the United Provinces (the present-day Netherlands). No place, undated, circa 1850. Folio volume (330 x 220 mm), raspberry-red half-morocco with corner pieces, spine with five raised bands highlighted with fine and thick cold-stamped fillets, title in gilt letters. Title page, 288 pp., 3 double-leaf plates of genealogies , 7 unnumbered folios. Slight wear to the joints and raised bands. Manuscript in black ink on white vellum, in fine, regular handwriting, with very few corrections. The text is interspersed with notes and source references. This chronology in fifteen chapters, never before published, traces the exceptional and dramatic life of Lamoral, Count of Egmont, from the death of his father, John IV of Egmont (1528), advisor and chamberlain to Charles V. The account focuses on describing his political career, marked by his loyalty to the Empire, and subsequently his role as a mediator in the religious tensions of the Spanish Netherlands. The final three chapters (13 to 15) focus on his arrest, his summary trial, and his execution, alongside the Count of Hornes, on 5 June 1568 in the Grand-Place in Brussels. This event, a symbol of Spanish repression, marked the beginning of the Eighty Years’ War (1568–1648), which would lead to the independence of the United Provinces (1648). Lamoral, Count of Egmont (1522–1568), though now almost forgotten, nevertheless left his mark on European history. Montaigne refers to him in his Essays as a victim of arbitrary power; Goethe made him the hero of his play Egmont (1788); and Beethoven composed the music for it (1810), including an overture that has become famous. Provenance: from the library of ‘Legentil’, with bookplate. A precious document in very fine condition.
