Description
SAND (George). Garibaldi. A rare edition of this tribute to Giuseppe Garibaldi by George Sand, which was censored in France. Leipzig, Alphonse Dürr, 1860. In-12 (120x180 mm), sewn, cover printed in black. 28 pages. Small tears at the edges, cover worn and browned, rare and faint foxing, more prominent in the margins, ex-libris mark on the title page. A rare edition ‘banned in France’ of this short text by George Sand, which served as an introduction to Giuseppe Garibaldi’s memoirs by Alexandre Dumas. In it, the French author praises the general’s work and actions in support of Italian unification, and shares her hope of one day seeing the fulfilment of a social revolution which she has hitherto seen fail: “ Let us hope that the miracle that has begun will be fulfilled, that the patriotic revolution of Italy will not perish, as all other revolutions have perished for having consumed their men too hastily, and that this one will embody the great new example which, by God’s will, it must set for the world today. ” Ex-libris by Jacques Dalyphard mounted as a frontispiece. In good condition inside.
