On the title page, Albert Camus signs a long and warm dedication to Georges Saillard, the actor who played the elderly patrician Senectus:
‘To Georges Saillard, one of those who bring honour and strength to the great craft of acting. For all that this play owes him, and as a token of respect, esteem and sympathy, with gratitude and fond remembrance. Albert Camus. Paris, March 1946”.
On the half-title page, the director of the Théâtre Hébertot, Jacques Hébertot, offers his own tribute. It was on this stage that the play premiered, with Gérard Philippe in the role of Caligula.
“It is for Albert Camus to express, dear Mr Saillard, and better than I could ever do, the artistic pleasure you have given us. For my part, I would add the impression of [illegible word] that I retain from a professional and collaborative partnership that has been doubly beneficial to my theatre. February 46. Jacques Hébertot.”
A fine, fresh and clean copy.
