Description
DORÉ (Gustave). Copperplate engraving by G. Doré to illustrate the chapter “Venial Sin” from Balzac’s *Contes Drolatiques*. Copper plate mounted on wood (100x150 mm), signed G. Doré and F. Pierdon, and titled "Le péché véniel". A superb copper plate that served as the matrix for one of Gustave Doré’s illustrations for the chapter “Le péché véniel” in Balzac’s Contes Drolatiques. It depicts a group of horsemen, some carrying a banner, riding through a forest overlooked by a tall building. The copper plate bears the engraved signatures of Gustave Doré and François Pierdon, who executed the engraving for the printed edition. A beautiful and rare item, in excellent condition.
