Description
THE WORK AND THE IMAGE. A monthly journal of contemporary art and the illustrated book.
An exceptional overview of the golden age of the illustrated book, under the patronage of bibliophiles, writers and artists.
Paris, Ch. Meunier, Maison du Livre, 1900–1903.
Three square quarto volumes (298 x 230 mm), Bradel-style binding in wine-coloured half-percale, spine decorated with gilt metal tools, gilt head.
Multiple pagination.
Slight wear to corners and caps. Interior fresh and clean.
First edition of this rare journal. Complete collection from the first to the last issue (November 1900 – December 1902). The copy is enhanced by the extremely rare supplement devoted to the ‘Livre d’art autogravé’.
Founded by the renowned bookbinder Charles Meunier and Léon Bérubé, this publication aimed to create a ‘link between bibliophiles and artists’ who had put their talents at the service of the book. A true showcase of the revival of the illustrated book during the Art Nouveau period, it brings together major literary contributions (Uzanne, Mauclair, Aubry) and exceptionally rich iconography.
The illustrations comprise 70 plates, including original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts by Robida, SEM, Steinlen, Chéret, Lebègue, Rochegrosse, Louis Morin, etc., as well as numerous drawings within the text.
A perfectly bound copy, with wide margins, retaining all the instalment covers as well as the volume covers designed by Meunier himself.
