Description
[SWARTZ (Carl Gottleib)]. An Explanatory Treatise on the Caucasian Sphere and, in Particular, on the Zodiac.
A fine copy in full contemporary morocco leather of this treatise by the astrologer Carl Gottleib Swartz on the origin of the signs of the Zodiac, illustrated with two folding maps and enhanced by a signed autograph dedication from the author.
Paris, Migneret, 1813.
Quarto (200x260 mm), full red morocco, smooth spine decorated with fillets, ribbons, fleurons and the title in full length in gilt lettering, gilt fillet and frieze framing the covers, gilt frieze on the edges and endpapers, all edges gilt (contemporary binding).
53 pages and 2 folding engraved plates, one of which by Tardieu after Poirson
Scuffs, water stains and discolouration on the leather, front cover slightly warped, some marginal foxing and traces of water damage on the upper margin of some pages, small tear without loss and water damage to the first plate.
A remarkable treatise by the astronomer and astrologer Carl Gottleib Swartz, author of *The Zodiac Explained*, who was the first to refute the attribution to the Greeks of the discovery of the signs of the Zodiac, which he claims were established 1,400 years earlier and traces their origin to geological formations near the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea.
At the end of the volume are two engraved folding plates, including a map of the sky and a map of the provinces of Shirvan in Georgia and part of Armenia based on the latest travellers’ accounts, engraved by Tardieu after J.B. Poirson.
A fine copy, enhanced by a beautiful autograph dedication signed by the author opposite the title page: “This treatise is dedicated to Madame Cécile Morel, née de Jullienne, by her most humble and most obedient servant.”
A fine copy in full contemporary morocco.
