An ambitious attempt at a systematic classification of the animal kingdom, based on the classifications of Jacob Theodor Klein and Carl von Linné. Paris, Cl.-J.-B. Bauche, 1754. Two volumes in-8 (195 x 132 mm). Marbled sheepskin, ribbed spine decorated with two pieces of red morocco in a mosaic pattern and an elegant design in gilt tooling. Frontispiece, (12)-400 pp.; frontispiece, 303-(1) pages; 6 plates. Leather slightly rubbed, gilt lettering somewhat faded; in volume 1, restoration at the bottom of the second joint. Endpapers replaced in the 19th century. A few foxing spots. First edition. The illustrations consist of portraits of Klein and Linnaeus on the frontispiece and six folding plates of zoological engravings by Maisonneuve. 
This treatise on taxonomy describes each species of quadruped, bird and amphibian according to the classification of Jacob Theodor Klein and that of Carl von Linnaeus; fish according to that of Peter Artedi; and finally insects and worms according to Linnaeus.
