A rare biography of Cosimo I de’ Medici, written by Baccio Baldini (c. 1510–1585), a physician and scholar who served as the prince’s personal physician until his death in 1574. Florence, Bartolomeo Sermartelli, 1578. In folio (314 x 229 mm). Vellum, plain spine decorated with a title label in gilt letters. (Binding from the 1820s). Text in Italian, [viii], 88 pp., 62 pp., 2 unnumbered pp.; 42 pp. Spine worn, slight stains on the covers. Signs of handling on the title page, marginal water stains, not affecting the text. A very well-printed first edition in Florence, from the press of Bartolomeo Sermartelli, title page bearing the Medici coat of arms, wood-engraved, text in attractive round type, adorned with illustrated initials. An interesting biography of the founder of the Medici dynasty. The volume also contains two supplementary treatises devoted to virtue, fortune and destiny, major themes in Renaissance political and moral thought. A fine copy with wide margins, preserved in a vellum binding.
