Description
[DUMAS (Alexandre fils)]. Institut de France. Académie Française. [Inaugural address to the Académie Française]. Printed proofs of Alexandre Dumas fils’s inaugural address to the Académie Française, corrected in his own hand. [No place, no publisher, no date (c. 1875)]. Quarto volume (280 x 225 mm). Brown half-shagreen, smooth spine, gilt lettering. 39 pages. Slight rubbing and signs of handling. An exceptional proof copy on which the author made handwritten corrections prior to the final publication by Didot. It is worth noting, for example, that at the time of the correction the date of the induction ceremony was not yet known; the text reads ‘77, 1875’. Ultimately, Alexandre Dumas fils’s acceptance speech to the Academy was delivered at his induction ceremony on 25 February 1875, in accordance with the corrections in this copy. On the flyleaf at the beginning, a handwritten note in pen by an anonymous person (signature erased) confirms: "Speech by Alexandre Dumas to the Academy, corrected by himself. Paris 1875".
