Description
[FESTIVAL BOOK] - [LE MERCIER]. A description of the festivities organised by the City of Paris to mark the marriage of Madame Louise-Elisabeth of France and Don Felipe, Infante and Grand Admiral of Spain.
A remarkable in-plano volume produced to mark the grand celebrations for the marriage of Louis XV’s eldest daughter, which were to take place on the Seine between the Pont-Neuf and the Pont-Royal.
Paris, Printed by P.G. Le Mercier. 1740.
In-plano volume (640 x 480 mm), marbled and glazed tan calfskin, the covers adorned with the great coat of arms of the city of Paris embossed in gold and a broad lace border with fleurs-de-lis at the corners, spine with ten raised bands decorated with fleur-de-lis panels. Rolled edges.
[2], 22 pages, XIII plates.
Binding with significant repairs to the spine, corners and edges. Light marks and small scuffs on the covers. Light signs of handling in the margins, a few foxing spots; the plate of the ‘general view’ has tears along the central fold (approx. 12 cm).
First edition and first printing of the 13 plates (including 8 double-page plates) engraved by J.F. Blondel after Salley, Servandony, Gabriel (the King’s chief architect) and Rousset. The illustration also includes a title vignette engraved by P. Soubeyran after Edme Bouchardon and a banner designed and engraved by J. Rigaud.
This book brings together views of the festivities celebrating the marriage of Louis XV’s eldest daughter to the second son of Philip V of Spain in 1739. Louis XV decided that the event would take place on the water between the Pont-Neuf and the Pont-Royal and commissioned the Florentine Servandoni to organise the celebrations. The remarkable intaglio engravings include, in particular, a spectacular general view of the decorations at the moment of the fireworks display, which gives an idea of the scale of this celebration, one of the most significant of the century.
A fine copy preserved in its original binding, decorated with the coat of arms of the City of Paris.
