Description
[MOQUOT (Nicolas-Jacques)]. A Mirror for Angry People: In which, whilst discovering the unfortunate effects of this passion, one also finds the means to cure it.
A rare 17th-century treatise on the passions, dealing with anger and ways to remedy it, in a vellum binding with clasps.
Liège, Louis Montfort, 1686.
In-16, off-white vellum with clasps, spine decorated with the handwritten title, red edges. Binding probably later.
6 unnumbered leaves - 357 pp. - 6 unnumbered leaves.
A small tear at the top corner, very slight foxing on the first few leaves, becoming less frequent thereafter.
Very rare first edition of this anonymous moral guide for those prone to anger, attributed to the dean of the church of Nevers, Nicolas-Jacques Moquot (16? – c. 1712).
Decorated with a few woodcut initials, it is divided into four chapters: ‘A Portrait of Anger & of those moved (sic) by this passion’; “Effects (sic) of Anger”; “Reasons for Suppressing Anger” and finally “Remedies against Anger”.
The binding, probably later but in very good condition, has retained its functional clasps.
This work is bound together with "Grapinian, or Arlequin the Procurator. A Comedy". Cologne, Jacques Wambel, 1686 [probably Leiden, Elzevier]. 6 unnumbered folios. - 41 pp. This play by Anne Mauduit, Lord of Fatouville, was first performed in 1684 and was a great success. It is here probably printed illegally under a pseudonym by a member of the prominent Brabant family of printers, the Elzeviers, based in Leiden.
A fine copy, very rare and in very good condition.
