Description
[MANUSCRIPT] - LE HARDY (Gaston). History of Nazareth and its sanctuaries: a chronological study of the documents.
The complete manuscript of a historical monograph on the city of Nazareth, now in Israel.
S.l., [1905]. Contemporary binding in glazed fawn half-calf, ribbed spine decorated with a label bearing the title in gilt lettering.
11 unnumbered pages, 312 pages, 6 pages.
Leather slightly discoloured on the spine, slight rubbing to the edges.
A precious autograph manuscript, written in pen on ruled paper in the author’s own hand, containing numerous corrections and erasures. The text is complete and reflects the stages of revision prior to its publication by Victor Lecoffre in 1905. An unpublished six-page text entitled ‘Apocryphes’, which does not appear in the printed version, has been bound in at the end.
On the front flyleaf is the dry-stamped coat of arms of the author, Gaston Le Hardy (1833–1911), a Norman scholar and member of several learned societies. Below this is a handwritten posthumous ex-libris from a member of the Le Hardy family, dated 15 February 1914.
This well-documented chronological study, which concludes at the end of the 19th century, constitutes a major contribution to our understanding of ancient documentary sources as well as to knowledge of the town and shrines of Nazareth, one of the most important holy sites in Christianity.
