[VOLTAIRE]. The Maid of Orléans. A heroic-comic poem in eighteen cantos. A fine copy in contemporary full morocco for this London edition with its risqué illustrations, comprising a frontispiece and 18 engraved plates. London, 1775. In-12 (85x130 mm), full cherry-coloured long-grain morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, green title label, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt fillet on the edges, all edges gilt (re-bound). 281 pages, 1 frontispiece and 18 engraved plates. Scuffing with some losses, spine split over 2 cm at the foot, a few minor foxing spots. New London edition of Voltaire’s scandalous heroic-comic poem, here accompanied by a very free illustration comprising a frontispiece and 18 engraved plates, attributed to Desrais (Cohen, 1031). It is supplemented by an epistle from Father Grisbourdon to Voltaire and a critique of the Poème de la Pucelle addressed to M***, with an epigram on the same poem. A fine copy.
