ÆMILIUS (Georg Oemler, known as Georgius). *Biblicæ historiæ, magno artificio depictæ, et utilitatis publicæ causa latinis epigrammatibus illustratæ*. Frankfurt am Main, Christian Egenolff, 1539. Small quarto, [54] leaves (marked A-M4 N6); red sheepskin (modern binding). A rare first edition, adorned with a magnificent series of woodcuts by Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550), a Nuremberg painter, engraver and stained-glass designer regarded as ‘the most important of the German Little Masters’ (Hind). This series comprises a beautiful historiated frame on the title page (bearing Beham’s monogram) and 80 woodcuts that were first published by Christian Egenolff in 1535. A copy that has been straightened, washed and pasted, in a modern binding. Minor restoration to the title page (lined with fine paper) and the final leaf; water damage to the backs of the first quires; and modest retouching to four engravings from Genesis.
