Description

ÆMILIUS (Georg Oemler, known as Georgius). A description of the images in the Apocalypse of John, with a true, pious and fitting exposition: which may serve as a substitute for a proper commentary, set forth in elegiac verse. Frankfurt am Main, Christian Egenolff, March 1540. Small quarto, [17] (of 28) folios (sign. a–g4); red sheepskin (modern binding). Third edition of this extremely rare work, illustrated with 18 (of 26) half-page woodcuts engraved by Hans Sebald Beham, accompanied by a commentary by Georg Æmilius. The title page is adorned with a wood-engraved typographic mark. A corrected copy, containing a handwritten Latin poem at the foot and on the reverse of the title page, entitled: Joannis [missing] Ad lectorem distichon; two anti-Catholic lines have been corrected (in a sense directed against the Ottoman Empire) by means of a handwritten correction on ff. c3 and g2. Incomplete by 10 folios of text, comprising eight woodcuts (a2–3, d1, e1–3, f1–3, g1) and the final blank folio (g4). The gap on the title page has been filled in, resulting in the loss of a few words from the handwritten poem; some foxing.
