ARIOSTO (L’). *Orlando Furioso*. Venice, Francesco de Franceschi, 1584. 3 parts in one in-4 volume, red morocco, triple gilt rule, decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges on marbled paper (18th-century binding). First printing of this magnificent edition by Ruscelli of Ariosto’s great epic poem, ‘sought after for the notes that accompany it and the engravings with which it is adorned’, writes Brunet. It is followed in the second part by Ariosto’s *Cinque canti* and in the third, with separate pagination, by Alberto Lavezuola’s *Osservationi sopra il Furioso*. ‘The most elaborate of the sixteenth-century editions’ (Mortimer). A sumptuous illustration by the Paduan artist Girolamo Porro, comprising 3 engraved title pages and 51 full-page plates, executed on copper by Porro with the assistance of Giacomo Franco and Bernardo Castello. As plate no. 34 was removed by the Inquisition in almost all copies, plate no. 33 was repeated in its place. A very fine copy in a delicate 18th-century Parisian binding.
